Digital Invitation Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts for Modern Hosts

When Are Digital Invitations Appropriate?

Digital invitations are now appropriate for almost every occasion. Birthdays, casual parties, baby showers, housewarmings, corporate events, and even many weddings have embraced digital invitations. The only events where paper invitations are still strongly preferred are very formal weddings and official state or diplomatic events.

Do's of Digital Invitations

  • Send them at least 2-3 weeks before the event (same timing as paper)
  • Include all essential details: who, what, when, where, RSVP
  • Choose a design that matches the event's tone
  • Send to individual contacts, not a mass group chat
  • Follow up with reminders as the date approaches

Don'ts of Digital Invitations

  • Don't send invitations via social media group posts where not everyone is invited
  • Don't use a generic group text with all recipient numbers visible
  • Don't send them at odd hours (respect time zones)
  • Don't include too many flashy animations that slow loading
  • Don't forget to proofread before sending

The Generational Factor

Older guests may need a brief note explaining how to access and RSVP to a digital invitation. A quick text saying "I've sent you a digital invitation — just tap the link to see the details and let me know if you can make it" removes any confusion.

Mixing Digital and Paper

Some events warrant a hybrid approach. Send digital invitations to the majority of guests and mail paper invitations to older family members who prefer traditional correspondence. This respects everyone's preferences without doubling your workload.
