How to Write 18th Birthday Invitations
An 18th birthday is a significant milestone in Australia: the age of legal adulthood, when young people gain the right to vote, drink, and enter venues independently. Your invitation should honour that significance while reflecting the personality and preferences of the birthday person.
Always include the full name of the birthday person, the date, start time, venue, dress code, and a clear RSVP deadline. For themed 18ths, make the theme obvious on the invitation, as guests need time to prepare costumes or outfits.
Consider who is hosting and write accordingly. If parents are hosting, the invitation traditionally comes from them. If the young adult is organising their own party, they issue the invitation themselves. Many 18ths are collaborative, in which case both can be mentioned.
For surprise 18ths, always set up a private communication channel for RSVPs that the birthday person won't see. Ask guests explicitly not to post on social media, and provide a believable cover story to get them to the venue.
Australian English conventions: write dates as day month year (21 March 2026), use "mum" and "dad", "organised" not "organized", and "colour" not "color".
